Name________________________________                                 Algebra Word Problems

Date_________________________________

Write equations to solve each of the word problems below.

1.  At a professional baseball game, the turnstile count showed that 17,406 people paid admission.  The total cash received for tickets was $133,372.  Without actually counting the ticket stubs, find out how many paid for reserved seats ($10.00 each) and how many paid for general admission ($6.00 each).

2.  Old silver coins contain 90% silver.  Silver solder contains 63% silver.  If you wanted to make 200 kilograms of an alloy containing 82% silver, how many  kilograms of old coins and how many kilograms of silver solder could you melt together to do this?

3.  A.T. Miles flies his small plane from Tampa to Orlando, a distance of 80 miles, against a headwind.  The trip takes 32 minutes.  Later, he returns to Tampa with the wind at his back, making the return trip in 20 minutes.  How fast does he fly through the air?  How fast is the wind blowing?

4.  Eb and Flo are pedal boating on the San Antonio River.  Going downstream their speed is 40 meters per minute (m/min).  Coming back upstream their speed is only 26 m/min.  How fast do they move through the water?  How fast is the current going?

5.  The octane number of gasoline can be thought of as the percent of the compound octane in the gasoline.  For instance 89 octane gas would be 89% octane and 11% something else.  Suppose that a wholesaler has 84 octane and 91 octane gas.  He receives and order for 15,000 gallons of 89.7 octane gas, how much of each kind should be mixed to fill the order?

6.  A trainload of cars and trucks is in route to an automobile dealer for whom you work.  Before they arrive, the dealer receives an invoice showing a total of 160 vehicles.  But part of the invoice showing how many of each kind of vehicle has been torn off and lost.  Your boss desperately needs to know how many of each there are before they arrive. Since you know algebra, she comes to you for aid.  The invoice shows a total mass of 182, 000 kg of vehicles, and each truck is 1400 kg and each car is 1000 kg.  How many of each kind of vehicle are there?

7.  Regular and unleaded gas sells for different prices per liter.  Suppose that 2 liters of regular and 3 liter of unleaded cost a total of 252 cents.  Five liters of regular and 4 liters of unleaded cost a total of 448 cents.  What is the price per liter of each kind of gas?

8.  Mel Ting sells half gallons of frozen yogurt for $4 each and gallons for $7 each.  One day Mel sells a total of 50 containers of yogurt for a total of $287.  Write a system of equations expressing these facts and solve it to find how many of each kind of container he sold.

9.  Suppose you operate a junk yard.  You have vast quantities of yellow brass (67% copper, 33% zinc) and red brass (85% copper, 15% zinc) on hand.  Al Oye sends an order for 500 tons of brass containing 80% copper and 20% zinc.  How many tons of each kind of brass would you have to melt together to fill Al’s order.

10.  A worm and a snail enter the relay races.  If the worm goes for 5 hours and then the snail goes for 4 hours, they cover a total of 448 inches.  If the worm goes for 2 hours and the snail goes for 3 hours, they cover a total of 252 inches.  How fast does each one slither?
